Cognitive/ educational assessments
This is a formal assessment of your child’s intellectual abilities and related cognitive abilities. The aim of the assessment is to understand where your child’s abilities are in relation to expectations for their age in order to detail their profile of strengths and needs.
This is particularly helpful where there are concerns about a child’s academic progress or ability to concentrate or engage with classroom learning. It is also helpful where a child has a condition which may impact on their cognitive development or schooling, in order to understand how best to support their needs.
The assessments use well established measures, such as the Wechsler Scales, which have good reliability and validity. I will use a range of standardised assessments with your child, which vary depending on their age and ability, including puzzle-based tasks, question and answer tasks, memory and attention activities.
With your permission it is often helpful to speak with the child/ young person’s school to get a full picture of how they present across different settings.
Based on the assessment, I am able to give recommendations and advice which you may want shared with your child’s school or other key individuals in their lives, to help them know how best to support their needs.
Developmental assessments
This is for infants and toddlers where there are general or specific areas of concern regarding their development.
This involves direct observation and a play-based developmental assessment to examine their cognitive, language, motor and social-emotional development in order to inform support needs, onward referral and/ or to make developmental recommendations to help them reach the next developmental steps.
With permission from a parent and if relevant this would also typically include liaison with the child’s childcare/ preschool setting.
